There are now a variety of helpful treatments available for those seeking to end their heroin addiction. Methadone, for example, is a synthetic opiate that blocks the effects of heroin, helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and has proven effective for breaking heroin addiction. Additionally, buprenorphine and other behavioral therapies can be used to successfully treat heroin addiction.

From 1997 to 2007, the number of people admitted to treatment who listed heroin as their primary drug of abuse increased from 235,143 to 246,871. However, these heroin-related admissions represented 14.6 percent of the total admissions during 1997 and 13.6 percent of the total admissions in 2007. The average age among those admitted for heroin treatment in 2007 was 36 years old.

During a heroin detox period, the addict will experience uncomfortable symptoms such as vomiting, bone and muscle pain, restlessness, diarrhea, drug craving, cold flashes, and kicking spasms. The worst of the withdrawal symptoms typically crest between 48-72 hours after the final heroin dose and will slowly subside in the days to follow.

Heroin Detox

Because the symptoms of withdrawal are incredibly difficult, it is safer for the user to go through detox properly in a supervised treatment facility. The user’s body becomes so dependent on the drug that it has difficulty functioning when heroin is not present on the body. When going through a detox program, the user will suffer from the following symptoms:

Irritability

Insomnia

Loss of appetite

Cold/hot spells

Chills

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Dehydration

Restlessness

Muscle and bone pain

Fever

Certain drugs do not require medical attention in the way heroin does when going through detox. When a heroin addict goes through detox at a specialized facility, there are certain medications that can be administered to help ease the pain. Click here to read more about heroin detox and the medications used during the process.

After Heroin Detox

Detox is only the first step in overcoming your drug problem. Most addicts who only go through detox are more likely to relapse soon after they are clean. Once finishing the detox process, a heroin addict will greatly benefit from seeking further assistance through a rehab facility in receiving counseling and coping techniques.
